3 Key Steps to Identify and Refine Your Unique Writing Voice
Connect with like-minded people while experimenting with different formats
During my initial writing phase, I did not know about writing voice. I used to research about topics that interest me and then write about it. As usual it did not work. It took a lot of time to do research and that took away the fun of writing.
In my 2.5 years of writing journey, I figured out my writing voice only a few months ago. So do not expect to get all the clarity about writing voice during the first few months.
Here are a few tips that I want to share with you.
Step #1 : Reflect on Your immediate past years
Before writing, list down all that you have achieved in the past 1-2 years. By achievement I don't mean anything big. It could be anything simple but having big impact in your daily life. Below are a few examples.
Learning to wake up early in the morning
Changing your food habit
Embracing physical fitness
Starting daily writing habit
Learning to enjoy alone time
Learning a new skill
Reducing overthinking
etc.
The entire purpose of writing should be to solve someone’s problem which you have faced and fixed it.
Then start writing for an imaginary person who is 2-years behind you and want to reach to your present self.
For example, in 2 years I have learnt to love writing daily and it has helped me in many ways. So when I write, I write for the absolute beginner writers who want to start writing but do not know where to start.
Step #2 : Experiment with different formats
Play with different writing formats to understand your writing voice. Here are a few things to try.
Shortform (200-300 words)
Social media post in bullet points
Longform content
Newsletter
Video
Memoir
Starting your own chat group
The more you experiment, the more it becomes clear to your about the writing voice.
After trying many writing formats, I found newsletter business would be the most appropriate format for me to start with. I did not have this clarity in the beginning. It took me some time. So don’t rush yet make daily tiny progress.
Step #3 : Connect with like-minded people
Once you find your writing voice, connect with the people who are already in the same business for a long time.
As a beginner you may have something in mind which could be very much different from the reality. You will be able to bridge the gap when you talk to the people who have implemented their ideas successfully.
You can connect in a few ways.
Social media( send a DM, write a comment)
Youtube( watch tutorial youtube of successful people)
Read a lot of books
Take an online course
That’s it.
Now, let me tell you the last thing. You may listen to a lot youtube and read a lot of books but unless you implement it, you will not get any idea. Take all the suggestions but keep only those that suit your lifestyle and personality.
